Minimum humidity level in wine cooler

Hi,

I have 2 wine coolers that are both running about 38-40% humidity at about

56 degrees. Any thoughts on the humidity being too low for longer term storage?

Thanks, Gary

Gary,

The most oft stated "desired" humidity level is 50-60%, ostensibly to not allow the corks to dry too much, but to not cause mold to grow on the labels. I have maintained mine at ~50% with the use of a fountain. However, after 10 years in my passive cellar in CO, where the relative humidity ran from 20-50%, depending on whether the evaporative coolers were running, I have not noticed any corks that dried out, though many of these bottles are in their new home, and I've not sampled their corks.

I'll bet someone in the group can cite specific test results, and offer comments on their experiences that might contradict my limited observations.

Thanks for the feedback Hunt. I've had these for about a year, and have not noticed any problems with a few wines sampled so I believe I am okay. Just wanted to see if there were any differing opinions in the group.

Cheers!
