Misc. Notes

2001 Lamborghini Trescone - a blend of sangiovese, ciliegiolo and merlot from Umbria. Some pleasant fruit in the nose, but the flavours on palate of this medium bodied wine are undifferentiated and a bit diffuse. Decent but nothing special, and not particularly good QPR.

2002 'Montes' Apalta Vineyard - much more interesting wine from the winery that makes the excellent Montes Alpha Cabernet and Syrah. This is a blend of cab and carmenere that slots in between the regular cab and the reserve wine. Dark wine, with an obvious cabernet nose, forward and sweet with soft tannins and good balance, and some pleasant currant fruit on palate. This is a good value and may improve a little and should hold for 2-3 years, but it is a wine to buy and drink for those in need of instant gratification. The 14% alcohol was not detectable in the nose.

2000 Ch, de Nages 'Cuvee Joseph Torres' - a syrah from Costieres de Nimes. Very dark purple. This young wine showed some white pepper in the nose, was meium to full bodied, smooth in the mouth and medium long, but had a slightly hollow spot in the middle. The nose was probably the best part of this wine, which while decent over all, will have hard time justifying the price.

2001 Vasse Felix Cebernet Sauvignin (Western Australia) - dark wine with a sweet nose of mixed oak, plums and blackberry. Sweet and mouthfilling, with some tannin that follows through to the finish. A bit more restrained than the usual Barossas. This wine will last for awhile, but we wondered if it had anywhere to go - probably won't develop much from here. Pretty decent for current drinking but not really a serious cellar candidate.

2001 Vasse Felix Shiraz - also 14% alcohol. Both darker and riper in the nose than the cab. Sweet entry, quite full bodied, but nonetheless a bit restrained. Better than the cab but certainly not quite up to the very good 1999. I could see cellaring some of this - if there weren't so many other similar wines at good value out there.
