Mortet and Barnett

Opened at a tasting last night.

2000 Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertain "Lavaut St. Jacques" -It seemed cloudy and a bit tired right after it was opened but within 30 minutes it seemed to settle and become much clearer and brighter. Nose of crushed red berries and iron. Rich red cherry on the palate with a bit of mushroom and leather notes. Very fine tannins and a smooth finish. A-

2004 Barnett Spring Mountain Cabernet-Fairly light weight from start to finish. Deep purple color but not much nose. A bit of black cherry and oak at first but it seemed to get weaker the longer it was opened. Subdued black fruit flavors and not much else. Perhpas a bad bottle? C

Too bad about the Barnett, I usually find it one of my favorite reasonable CalCabs. But last I had was 2001.

I find notes on Denis Mortet's wines to be melancholy for me given his tragic death. Do you (or anyone else) have any experience with his son's wines to know whether the estate's wines have changed in character and/or quality?

Ouch! I paid $36 for the 2001. Don't have recorded what I paid for '96 (only other I still have), but considerably less

His widow and son are still making the wines with the help of an outside winemaker formerly at Bretagna. The 2006 vintage will be the first that they made so only time will tell.
