Two 1988 Burgs

Opened over the weekend with friends and lots of different foods:

1988 Joseph Drouhin Griottes Chambertain-Quite light in color with a fair amount of brick and sepia. A bit cloudy yet I was very careful with the ultrafine sediment. The nose was quite mature with typical old Burgundy earthy, mushroom and exotic spice and Chai notes. The wine was quite elegant on the palate, medium bodied with plenty of red cherry, red raspberry and a bit of cola. Vibrantly acidic and a bit tannic yet very nicely balanced with the fruit. I wouldn't hold this wine much longer but it's still drinking quite well and I have a few bottles left to consume over the next year or two. B+ on the Dale Scale 1988 Joseph Roty Mazi Chambertain-This was a horse of a different color..literally. Very dark purple in the glass, almost black with very little hint of age save for a bit of light at the rim. Full bodied nose of black currants, black cherry and plum with a significant amount of mineral and black coffee. The wine was fairly firm on the palate with plenty of grip and a ton of blackberry and cassis. This wine drank more like a 1995 than a 1988 and still has a number of years to go. A- on the Dale Scale.

Bill, we had this wine (Roty calls it Mazy-Chambertin, no?) over a year ago in a tasting of '88 Burgs from an auction purchase that Jean had made. At that time (9/05), both Roty's Mazy-Chambertin and his Gevrey "Fontenys" were quite tight and youthful; I opined that the Mazy might need another five years to show at its best. Glad you enjoyed it.
