Recent steals

Though this doesn't qualify as much as other stories I've heard, I recently found two bottles of 2001 Vieux Telegraphe CdP "La Crau" at a deli in Ogunquit, ME for $32.99 each. I snagged them as soon as I saw them on the shelf.

At the register, they wouldn't scan, so the clerk went to check the price on the shelf, and when she came back she said "$8.99". I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I'd left it at that, so I corrected her and showed here where I found the bottles, where the name of the wine and 32.99 price were clearly printed.

So, $66 later, I have a couple bottles that I can put away and try to forget about for a few years.

Has anyone else found any good deals lately?

A bottle of Flowers chardonnay rang up at $10 and when I told the store it couldn't possibly be right they insisted it was. I should've bought all they had, but I just bought the one bottle. I still think there was a mistake somewhere.

Best deal I've had in a while was "Pierre Gimmonet Fleuron" champagne for $19/bottle. I did clean the store out of that. Also, 2000 Phelps Insignia for $44.

A downtown DC restaurant had 50% off the wine list on Monday nights(maybe still does). For years, they never figured out that the really high end CA wines came in 6 packs.

The took the wholessale price multiplied times 3 or 4, then divided by

  1. On Monday they cut the price in half, bringing the prices to wholesale, or less.

Corisson, Elyess, Le Paviots, Martinelli, level of wines.

The strangest feature of this place was that they did not have a decanter, so we drank a lot more chard & p>Though this doesn't qualify as much as other stories I've heard, I

I've had several over the years. The best was my local wine store (and good friend) ordered a generic Margaux. The distributor sent 1982 Chateau Margaux and charged him $12.00. My friend charged me $18. I gave it to my brother and his wife for his 25th wedding anniversary.

I also bought two bottles of 1970 Dow Vintage Port. The lady at the counter couldn't find a price so she said "There it is - 10 year old port" or something like that. Very cheap.

Also bought two cases of 1989 Chateau Talbot at $19 per bottle, two cases of

1979 Chateau Lafon Rochet at $5.00+ per bottle and lots of 1980 Chateau Rayne-Vigneau at around $10 per bottle.

Lovely. I love the 1996 Fleuron, and it retails at about 27 euros in Spain. Great stuff, and I am willing to try the 1999 also since I have been told it is so nice.

A few weeks ago, I managed to find La Reserve de Leoville Barton 1999 at

8,70 euros at a sale at a hypermarket. Also La Sirene de Giscours 2001 at 6,70 euros. La Reserve was clearly a steal.

Best,
