Tannat is not as known as Merlot, but I would hardly call it unknown... it is THE grape of Uruguay and THE red grape of the French South West.

Easy to remember: tannat = tannic.

Well I'd never heard of it until I visited Southern Brazil (RS) recently. I must say I liked it, and I've brought some home to Aus to try with friends.
