TN: 1996 Ridge Geyserville

Opened last night for a wine-loving visitor from the UK who wanted to learn what Zinfandel was all about:

color: dark garnet with no browning at the edges nose: bright, tart raspberry palate: rich, slightly jammy berry fruit, full in the mouth, with a touch of cedar and mineral complexity, finishing with integrated oak.

Classic Geyserville, if not quite up to the standard of the phenomenal

1990. Still at its peak, I think that this one has at least another 3-4 years of life in it. Great stuff! The last question the visitor wanted to know was where he could get it in the UK. :-)

Finding good Zin in UK can be tough, but I've had a couple of decent Beringers and a surprising one from Marks and Spencer. M&S own-brand everything they sell, no matter who makes it, so I don't know who the producer was. IIRC it was called Lone Tree. The ubiquitous Fetzer is OK, if unremarkable. OTOH Primitivo is a bit fashionable right now, and Virgin Wines in particular have some good stuff available.

Regards,

Ian
