TN: 1996 Ravenswood Monte Rosso Zin

Given the current threads about Zin and the Monte Rosso Vyd, it's fortuitous that last night we opened up a bottle of 1996 Ravenswood MR Zin with dinner.

color: garnet with no hints of brick at the edge nose: initially reticent, it opened up to notes of cedar, mint, tar and raspberry palate: medium body with fully resolved tannins, slightly oaky on entry, with berry fruit and cedar dominating the flavors, finishing slightly soft but in balance

Yet another bottle made from the old Louis Martini vineyard, this wine has certainly reached its peak but shows no signs of fading yet. In its youth, it was quite tough and tannic, but after 8+ years, those youthful tannins have given way to reveal a suprisingly elegant wine.

Thanks for the TN. I've been squirrling away some Monte Rossos (after my last mistaken comments on Monte Bellos, that I somehow confused with MRs), I re- read your article to make sure).

I've been planning a mixed-up "horizontal" of MRs from several producers, mostly from the late 90's. Maybe the time is right to bring out the '96s and see what is shaking. We're having a bunch of winos over Saturday, for a pre- Easter dinner, so this ought to be a good, and worthy audience.

Now, if I can only get my wife to give up the idea of a honey-glazed ham, and help me out a bit with an entre for some older Zins.

Thanks, Hunt

Great minds think alike, Hunt (or, in our case, similarly twisted minds think alike): I too have been planning a Monte Rosso mini-horizontal, though from the '95 vintage. Alas, I have only the Ravenswood and Biale versions, but I may try locating a bottle of the Rosenblum Monte Rosso for comparison. I also made the Monte Rosso/Monte Bello goof in a fairly recent post on a ZAP tasting.

Ack!! With White Zin, perhaps ;-) Give the old Easter/lamb line and see if she bites :P
