Given the current threads about Zin and the Monte Rosso Vyd, it's fortuitous that last night we opened up a bottle of 1996 Ravenswood MR Zin with dinner.
color: garnet with no hints of brick at the edge nose: initially reticent, it opened up to notes of cedar, mint, tar and raspberry palate: medium body with fully resolved tannins, slightly oaky on entry, with berry fruit and cedar dominating the flavors, finishing slightly soft but in balance
Yet another bottle made from the old Louis Martini vineyard, this wine has certainly reached its peak but shows no signs of fading yet. In its youth, it was quite tough and tannic, but after 8+ years, those youthful tannins have given way to reveal a suprisingly elegant wine.
