TN: 2000 Gary Farrell RRV Pinot Noir

Opened with a light dinner of grilled Double Gloucester on sourdough with escarole soup:

2000 Gary Farrell Russian River Pinot Noir

nose: soft and inviting, red fruits, smoke and minerals, later getting a touch of barnyard palate: medium body, getting more weighty as it opens, pure varietal fruit, smoke, acids and great balance

This is Mr. Farrell's "entry level" bottling. Tasted at the winery at the time of purchase, I descibed it as tight, cherryish and light. Time has added weight but also provided it with softer fruit. It is quite Burgundian, resembling a good Village-level wine. Excellent PN and quite good with food, but not quite the match of the great '99.

I like the Gary Farrell wines. Did you try the Rochioli vineyard Gary Farrell?

I remember reading that Gary Farrell had announced he was no longer going to be actively involved with the winery some time after selling to Allied-Domecq. This was long after the 2000 bottling, but I was wondering if there have been any ill effects from his departure. We've been following him since he worked with Davis-Bynum years ago.

I've also wondered that, but have no first-hand knowledge to bring to bear on the question. I'm also a big fan of Mr. Farrell's Pinot Noirs and it would be a big loss if the winery slips in quality. I know that Ian Hoare was not overly impressed with them on a visit last Fall (right, Ian?) so perhaps there's our answer...

I was there in July and do not recall that he was not involved. In fact they stated he was the winemaker in the tasting room.

I'm fairly certain I recall that Gary Farrell announced he was no longer going to be actively involved with the winery shortly after it was acquired by Allied-Domecq (1-2 years ago?). It would not have affected the 2000 vintages, but is there any word on whether things have changed since his departure? We've been following him since he was at Davis-Bynum, many years ago.

Salut/Hi Mark Lipton,

When we were there, (with Tom Shudic, by the way), he and his wife were away on holiday, but she laid on a lovely visit. So I'm surprised if he had nothing to do with winemaking any more. I liked the wines, but wasn't blown away. I'd not want people to think I thought they weren't good. ATB Ian
