TN: Joseph Phelps Insignia 1978

I bought the Joseph Phelps Insignia 1978 shortly after release and it has been properly stored. There were no cork and other issues, and the fill was still in the low neck. This wine contains 13.5% alcohol.. The grapes used were Cabernet Sauvignon 50%, Merlot 30%, and Cabernet Franc 20%. Insigna is one of the earlier California Bordeaux style blends, and as such was entitled to only a red wine and not a variety name.

The wine is in top form and could hold well for many more years. There is little indication of age in the color. Tasted blind, it would be easy to guess the wine is 10-15 years younger. It has a full, but not overdone, bouquet and taste, both very complex. Balance is nearly perfect. I wish I had much more than the one remaining bottle. I think it is probably better than the 1974 which I have not tasted for a few years.
