TN Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1988, Vogue

The wine is Musigny Vieilles Vignes 1988, Comte de Vogue, bottle 00177. Many of the 1988 red Burgundy wines are rather classic in structure and are requiring quite a bit of time to open up. In contrast, many of the

1990s are better drinking when young, may be a bit better than the 1988s in the long term, but then some of the 1988s may prove best in the end.

The wine is rather deep ruby for a Burgundy. It is now awake and drinking very well. Those who like their wine on the youthful side may well like it best now. However I think it may develop more intensity and complexity of bouquet over several more years, and I do not intend to retaste for a few years.

This wine is quite concentrated, especially for a Musigny. It now has a very clean Pinot Noir character with dark fruit such as black cherries, some beet root character, and a hint of vanilla. There is a bit of floral quality in the bouquet. There is none of the barnyard character you sometimes find in Burgundy. There is enough acid. The tannins are of medium quality and now fairly smooth. This is a very high quality Musigny. From what I have read, the corresponding 1990 is likely to be a bit better in this case, if not one of the best from this estate in recent years.

It's interesting that you note the bottle number. I have bottle number 00001 of the 1995 Vogue Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru. I wonder if it has some intrinsic value by being bottle #1? Bi!!

A few of the producers do use bottle numbers. They probably help with controlling fake bottles of the wine. I have not heard of collectors of low bottle number wines or labels, but people collect just about everything else. I guess the way to find out is to put an empty bottlle, with a low bottle number, up for auction at eBay.

There is one very famous collector of no. 1 bottles: Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence, Italy. The cellars of this former Michelin

3 star house (they have been downgraded to 2 stars years ago) are a legend, and they own many no. 1 bottles from Gaja, Sassicaia, DRC etc.

Bottle numbers have been used by both DRC and de Vogue for a long time. My 1959 DRC La Tache has a bottle number as well as my 1949 Musigny Vieilles Vignes, Comte de Vogue. These are the oldest bottles I have from both estates, so likely even some earlier bottles were numbered.
