I was at an exhibition a couple of years ago and there was a company selling underfloor storage units. The idea is that you dig a hole in the floor and drop in a unit provided by them. It has a glass and stainless steel lid that lays flush with the floor when closed.
I have been trying to find the company online with no luck and wondered is anyone out there knows who they are.

Cool idea, if I was doing new construction in an area with appropriate geology/climate I'd consider.
Thanks for the info - this is defintely in the right direction. The one I was after is on a smaller scale. You can get a version that the rack pops up out of the ground on gas struts, or you just open the lid and get down on your hands and knees (depending on your budget I guess).

A friend whose husband is a builder has a self built version - concrete drainage ring segments set vertically in a hole in the kitchen floor, trap door over the top and ladder down into the cellar with built in racks all round.
