Hi, I would like to know the reason or the historic of the bottom shape of a wine bottle. Why is there a concave shape in the bottom a wine bottle.

An addendum to the "remnant of traditional glass blowing" explanation: It is not necessarily a natural function of the glass blowing process
-- many hand-blown glass objects do not have a punt -- but was done intentionally so that the jagged edge where the bottle was broken from the punti/pontil(whatever) was recessed, so it would not scratch the surface upon which the bottle rested.
