wine club results for 6 Zins

The six Zins were Renwood Fideltown 2002, Ridge Lytton Springs 2004, Ravenswood Old Vines 2004, Joel Gott 2005, Dancing Bull 2004, Sue Capano's grandpa's homemade 1962.

The Ridge ($37) was chosen to be the best by the participants. It was very well balanced, dry, peppery, spicy and with some fruit.

The Ravenswood ($50) came in a close second. It was similar in character but dryer, chewy with licorice, subtle fruit.

The Joel Gott ($16) came in third. Very fruit forward, jammy, not as well balanced, not dry.

The Dancing Bull was 4th ($11). Fruity, less dry, not outstanding.

The Renwood was 5th ($25). The participants liked it but it was very light, not dry, not substantial like the others. It was deemed a good wine sans food.

Sue Capano's granddad's homemade Zin made in 1962 was drinkable but very different from the others. It was dry, little fruit left. There was a very slight taste of vinegar, understandable given the age, and a little brine to the aroma.

Next month's theme is Pinot Noir.

I enjoy these comparative tasting notes - thanks for the posting. Not surprised the Lytton Springs came in with high marks - it's a delicious wine. Surprised the Gott was more well received than the Renwood. Not because I think so highly of the Renwood, but my opinion of Gott hasn;t been altogether great. Maybe I need to try it again.

Some people swear that their old Zins are indistuingishable from aged merlots or Cabs (hmmm), but one thing is for sure; if you like the varietal character of Zin, don;t put it down for more than a few years. Sounds like grandpa's HMS (Home Made $#!^) suffered the same fate. But a home made wine still being drinkable 44 years later is a feat unto itself. Kudos to grandpa.

Ed, It turns out I was wrong about which Ravenswood we drank. It is know as Ravenswood Wisdom Zin 2004, and has no label but the design is etched on the bottle. It was extremely nice, but not quite as wonderful as the 2004 Ridge Litton Springs. The cost of shipping California wines to Massachusetts skyrocketed earlier this year but will likely come down in the near future.

Interesting results, Prof. I'm not at all surprised that the '04 Lytton Springs came out on top: Ridge hit a home run with that bottling in '04. Light and dry seems an odd descriptor for any Renwood Zin, but I haven't had it, so defer to those who have.

Thanks for the notes! Mark Lipton

Just wondering $50 seems quite high for the Ravenswood Old Vines. Was that a typo?
