Alum/screw cap vs cork

Last week on TV 5 from France the president of the wine producers made the following statement: Due to poor quality of today's cork 20 % of this year produced wine will be bottled with aluminum screw caps. The same oak trees have being harvesters for hundred of years. They no longer generate a bark of good enough quality for wine corks. Many french native people are insulted with this new approach. This explained that only 20% of the wine will be bottled using alum/screw caps to start. Eventually all wine will be bottled using alum/screw caps. They also stated that the screw cap is much better. Because not all people drink a full bottle at one time and re-corking the bottle with the old cork is no good. Using today's (new) corks for mass production is risky and reports have shown that the wine gets impaired.
