Cants

Does the inverted "cant" in the typical wine bottle serve any useful purpose to the amateur winemaker? I prefer a wine bottle having a flat bottom with no inverted cant. It is easier to fill with a bottle wand and takes less storage space.

They are called punts usually, and many have theorized about their original purpose, whether it was to collect sediment or rather a function of how bottles used to be made... check the archives at there are some interesting posts IIRC.
