How Much Yeast?

Ok, sure may be a silly question....but haven't found the answer spelled right out for me..

Making one gallon batches....of say...Elderberry wine... How much yeast to use?

The package says "For up to 5 gallons..." The recipe doesn't say, and I've been unable to fine a good answer....

Do I use the whole packet, or do I divide it into 5 parts?

Anyone?

Much appreciate any responses...

right out for me..

Just dump it all in. Extra yeast doesn't hurt anything.

What "Tom S", says is correct, the packet indicates 1< 5 gallons. This relates to the range that the packet covers.

The yeast will reproduce as needed, so you can vary the starting amount of yeast quite a bit and the wine will be just fine. If you start with more, the yeast just reaches saturation a little sooner. Unless you have a use for the rest of the packet (say, within the next couple of weeks), I'd just use the whole thing. It sure won't hurt, and yeast is cheap.

As stated, yeast is cheap so you can use it all. But if you are the conservative type, start another batch and use half in each. ... Or you can be very conservative and only make 5 gallon batchs so you don't waste any yeast! ;o) That is my meathod.

out for me..

I make 1 gallon batches and use the whole package, it just results in the wine getting a bit of a head start. Ken
