Your Suggestions as to Pub / Bottle Shop Most Appreciated

My dilemma: I'll be in the UK for a very short time in specific locations, not of my choice, and want to experience good English and Belgian ale. I won't have time to sample the pubs and take a leisurely walk around (I wish) so I need to zero-in and get the maximum amount of pleasure with the least amount of hunting.

I'll be in McNair Rd. Top Locks, Southall Middlesex UB2 4XG

and at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic 13-15 Parkwood Road Bournemouth BH5 2DF.

The date will be early June if that matters. Pub staff that know their business and have a pleasant manner would be also most appreciated as is your time in this matter.

Thanks to you all.

Dear DB, I have no personal knowledge of either town, but the following comes from CAMRA's GoodBeerGuide, 2005 - if by some miracle you end up staying longer, or come back for longer, buy a copy!

Southall Conservative & Unionist Club (a club which is part of a major rightwing political party, but with good micro-brew beer on from Rebellion Brewery, plus a guest beer!) Address - Fairlawn, High Street, UB1 3HB. Tel - (020)85740261 To find it, look for the gap between the old & new fire stations :~) You're supposed to be a party member, or CAMRA member or have a copy of the GBG in order to enter the place, but I reckon if you asked nicely . . . & hold right-wing beliefs :~)

Anyone else care to recommend any pubs in Southall? Supposed to be very good for a decent curry too.

Bournemouth has . . . The Goat & Tricycle, 27-29 West Hill Rd, BH2 5PP. Tel - 01202 314220. Sells lots of Wadworth's beers, incl 6X from oak cask, but has 11 handpumps in total. (this one seems to be the only cantral one?)

Porterhouse, 113 Poole Rd, Westbourne, BH4 8BY. Tel - 01202 768586. Sells Ringwood cask beers, real local cider, lunch Mon-Sat.

Shoulder of Mutton, 1010 Ringwood Rd, Bearcross, BH11 9LA. Tel 01202

573344. Ringwood 49er & a guest beer; old pub games (incl shove ha'penny)

"Excuse me, I'm not actually a member here, but I must say this place is getting overrun with darkies."

"Ah, come in Sir. Just sign the book here."

You will be about a mile away from The Fox, Green Lane, Hanwell which is an excellent pub with excellent beer - Taylors Landlord, London Pride and Deuchars on my last visit 10 days ago.

The pub is about 100 yards from the canal at Hanwell locks - you can walk to/from Southall along the canal towpath if you want to.

If you don't find it funny I can't argue with that, but I can assure you that people still make remarks such as those you've snipped, and a good place to start looking for them would be round Unionist and Conservative Clubs.

I hope it came across that I was satirising these remarks rather than endorsing the sentiments behind them.

I don't often visit those sort of places myself, and would presume from your remarks that you don't. Are you certain this is not just hearsay, or are your own prejudices showing? I would also argue that your own 'working class heroes' are as likely to be as racially prejudiced as any middle class Tory voter.

I guessed that, but found the whole post offensive on several levels. I certainly don't consider this forum to be the correct place for political/racial-prejudicial discussion, and consider this one closed.

Well, maybe Unionist and Conservative clubs have changed into bastions of liberalism and have committees which are fighting for the rights of asylum seekers and have started organising ESOL classes for Slovakian immigrants since I last looked, but I doubt it.

I'm just extrapolating from what I hear Unionist and Conservative politicians say at national level. I assume that the position at ground level is more rightwing than the national leadership, since my (very limited) experience of the Labour Party is that the activists are more leftwing than the leadership.

I would also argue that your own

Fair point. In fact if you wanted to find those attitudes they're readily available where I work, on the railways.

Er..OK then - although I notice you got your points in first :) But yes, I totally agree - let's get back to the beer.

I completely agree. Seems like many so-called 1st world countries are going a bit fascist these days, 'though you won't find me counted amoungst their numbers.. or drinking at their establishments.

Thanks to everyone for the input. Between here and
