One of the few pubs of character in Bolton town centre is now up for sale. Thwaites have slapped a £225,000 price tag on the Dog And Partridge on Manor Street in Bolton.
The three-room pub dates back to the mid-nineteenth century and has been in Thwaites hands since they purchased it from Bass in 1978 (Bass previously inherited the pub with their takeover of the Cornbrook Brewery of Manchester - note the Cornbrook Ales window in the back room).Since then Thwaites have done very little to the pub save for a lick of paint to the exterior last year. Internally, too, the layout has been unchanged for many years although this undoubtedly adds to the pub's charm. There are three distinctly separate rooms including a vault, served by one double-countered bar.
In recent years the pub has become a magnet for musicians and is the headquarters of the Bolton Music Collective who hold weekly gigs there. There are also acoustic sessions and even the occasional outdoor festival in the pub's back yard! As a result the Dog and Partridge boasts a somewhat 'bohemian' clientele in an area where most of the pubs are frequented by Burberry enthusiasts.
The landlords are looking to buy the pub themselves - it would make an ideal free house - but there is the danger that it may be sold for an alternative use or even demolished as it stands at the end of a car park.
A classic and one to visit before it is too late.
