Worth a visit?

Hi, Urgent. Any ideas for real ale pubs in Ravenglass (Cumbria) and near Carlisle rail station?

Oh you are lucky!! [1]

The former station buildings at Ravenglass station, The Ratty Arms, is worth a visit. 3 real ales: Jennings Bitter and two fairly uninteresting nationals. Also, a short walk into the village (turn left on main road) takes you to the Holly House Hotel - Jennings last time I looked.

Of course, a trip on the La'al Ratty takes you into Eskdale to 5 more Real ale pubs worth a visit, if you have time!

In Carlisle, turn left outside the station onto Botchergate and there is the Woodrow Wilson (Spoons) on the right and the Cumberland Inn (guest ales and a heritage, ex-state management scheme pub) over the road.

Let me know if you have longer or want to go further!!

I'm not sure how much oil would be saved (do some computers need more lubricating?) but GBG2007 has The Ratty Arms - on the platform at Ravenglass Station - CA18 1SN. GBG has several Carlisle pubs, but I don't know if they're near to the station. cheers, MikeMcG

Nah, just a reference to the power sucking properties of most PeeCee machines. The RISC OS users meanwhile are sucking the level of power required by a typical PDA (plus some for the drive and screen)

I lost track a while back but I think the price of oil (and hence petrol) has risen *slower* than the price of beer.

Does this mean we need to produce a WMD plot in the Czech Republic or Belgium, so we can invade and nick their beer? Or something.

Go South, young man. Forget the fleshpots of Carlisle. It's a bit mediocre in beer terms (any town that relies on its JDW outlets is almost by definition thus)

Instead, take the train to Foxfield, not far down the line. It's a request stop, so make sure you tell the guard. There you'll find the Prince of Wales, which not only brews, but has a stonking range of guest ales. You will not be disappointed.

Hi, RISC OS machines aren't PC's. They don't have fans on top of their CPU. So they are quieter and don't use as much electricity. And, of course, they save energy on the (none) manufacture of the fans they don't use. 8-) BW.... Chris F.

Hi, I wonder if that's the recently re-opened Spoons you were telling us about? There's a connection between the ex-state and Theakstons (the recipes, not the family) I think? Thanks for the info. A small group of chaps (who are really old enough to know better) are planning a rail trip away from Manchestria - because they can. BW.... Chris F.

Hi, Nice one, Stephen. Every little helps! Strangely I recall that, in my student days, 2'6" would but 20 Embassy tipped or a gallon of petrol - but I can't recall the price of a pint of Double Diamond. BW.... Chris F.

I agree with this - best pub in Cumbria IMO, but since he was specific about Ravenglass and Carlisle, that is what he got!

You should recall the old slogan:

DD is K9 P

Or was that not an official one? ;-)

Oh!

Do you want guidance to a couple of better pubs a little away from the station in Carlisle? Both selling Yates + guest. In fact, the only ones selling Cumbrian brewed beers that are not Jennings.

I actually think that Haverthwaite (Anglers Arms) and Ings (Watermill) are better :-) Also the the Broughton (Manor Arms) is up there as well.
