Hi, Sadly, no. Final arrangements from our ticket buyer: No train space from Carlisle to Mcr! Need to leave from Lancaster.

So, any ideas in the environs of Lancaster rail station?

Hi, Looking back I cant think why it was so popular. Well I can: the herd instinct. The other one to swear by was Watney's Red Barrel. BW.... Chris F.

Loobyloo will be along shortly!!

However, there is ALWAYS room on the local (coastal, via Barrow) trains from Lancaster to Carlisle. They do not take bookings fpr these, AFAIK! Never seen any, anyway!

Go for it!

I remember drinking some Watneys Red in my Younger days (oops, sorry!). It tasted so disgusting that I didn't drink any more beer for years. "If that's what beer tastes line, it's definitely not for me." These people learnt their lesson. The modern equivalent is equally disgusting, but as it doesn't taste of anything much, drinking the stuff isn't such a negatively memorable experience.

Hi, He who buys tickets has bought, I'm told. So, direct from Ravenglass to Lancaster and thence to Mcr because from Carlisle to Mcr is fully loaded. Why does everybody want to leave Carlisle for Mcr on a friday evening? (Rhetorical, this isn't the correct ng.) Anyway thanks for the Rglass info.

And if I bump into Loobyloo, I'll be sure to pass-on your regards. ;-)

Oh! Sorry I missed this one!

Funnily enough in about 30 minutes I'll be in the nearest teh railways station too, watching the Newcastle game.

I suppose it's too late but here goes...

1) turn left o/s rly stn, down the hill towards town 200yds - The Merchants. Atmopheric old wine cellers, youngish but well-behaved crowd, one room n/s, a very rare place where you can watch football without the shouting and yelling and macho rubbish you get in the Walkabout say. Black Sheep and Jennings (AFAIKR). As I say, it helps if you're into football on European or Premiership days, but there is one quiet room (a tad bleak though). 2) Carry on into town in the same direction, cross the main road, carry straight on towards Market Square and on the RH side of Market St, about 100yds from the Merchants, The John O'Gaunt ("One of the best town pubs in England" - The Guardian"). Live music weekday nights (folk, RnB, jazz), 6 real ales, grown-up crowd, loads of jazz memorabilia on walls, bit crowded sometimes, long narrow pub. No juke box, TV. Longstanding GBG entry. My second home.

Or...

When you come out of the Merchants, turn left at the lights and just grit your teeth for five minutes and walk along the main road, past the coffee merchants, down a steep hill, the first left onto the Quay and the first house is a very old pub, our branch's Town Pub of the Year 2006 - The Three Mariners. Mind your head if you're tall. 5 real ales, no piped music, slightly bizarre harlequin-trouser material upholstery, older crowd, real fire most nights.

HTH, for your next visit, at least.

Translated, that means "the pub nearest to the railway station".

Haven't even had a drink yet!

Hi, Sad coffee at Picadilly. Excellent breakfasts at the Ratty in Ravenglass. Frozen in the open carriage on the ng steam train.

1st class lumps of cake at the far end. Good beer and open fire back at the Ratty. Left out of Lancs sta, lt at lights, rt at lights, 2nd (hotel) on rt. 8 real ales & large cold salads. Matt was collecting beers from bar so dont know what - but each very satis. Back in Manchestria for Turkish at the Topkapi on Deansgate. Knackered but content. Worth a visit? - oh yes! BW....
