1953 vintage?

I'm looking for a 50. birthday present for my father, and was wondering if it is possible to get hold of vines from 1953?

Any type of wine will be fine, but Port is preferred.

I've been able to locate 1953 Armagnac, but he doesn't like brandy :/

Could you please provide a budget. There are many 1953s I can recommend highly, but these days those can command well over $1,000. Knowing your budget will help me and others narrow down recommendations.

German Auslese could be good- try to get a von Schubert Maximim Grunhauser if you can- thought it might be more than 200 Euros.

For Bordeaux, magnums are best at this point since standard bottles are fading- but being in Europe you have access to much better older bottles than we in the US. Consider Chateau Margaux (my first choice!), Lafite, Leoville Barton or Petrus.

Hope this helps!

Jan Paulson (a Swedish dentist cum wine-merchant based in Germany) has a good looking Sauternes (1953 was excellent in Sauternes, too):

His sources are usually very good. You can call him and ask him about the Arche-Lafaurie (EUR 125); from what the pic says, this looks good.
