Sorry, it's Chateau Cantin Grand Cru 1996, not Chateau de Cantin.
We have had a recent diagreement about 1996 Saint-Emilions in this group! I remain of the view that it was a better year than it gets credit for. It was a slow developing year but I think wines like Cantin are drinking well now and will go on doing so for the next eight to ten years. This will have been made by the Marquis de la Croix Landol whose wines were good for laying down in any but the lighter years. The Merlot (65%) used then to be
100% oak aged for a year, a third in new oak, and the Bouchet (21%) had six months in oak whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon saw no oak at all. In its youth the new oak was rather dominant but the whole assemblage softens well and the wie always shows good fresh red fruit flavours.I have some of the 1998 which is not yet really at its best yet — it needs a lot of air in a large decanter to come to life and I am keeping it awhile.
