I am not sure if this is the right forum, but I will try it here. I received a crystal decanter with ground glass stopper. My wife would like to use it. I feel it would allow the contents (single malt, cognac or brandy) to go bad. The stoppers just do nt seem to be as good as teh factory cork the bottle came with. Anyone with experience in this area, I would appreciate your opinion. Oh, I also do not entertain large numbers of people nor drink like a fish. TIA. Leukeran

Distilled spirits such as you've listed don't "go bad" the way wine will. You can keep bottles of spirits for years after they've been opened. However, there's another problem with which you should be aware. You shouldn't store wine or spirits for long periods of time in _leaded_ crystal decanters because the lead will leach out of the crystal with time and accumulate in the liquid.

Usually, the manufacturer will say so: leaded glass is more sparkly (hence 'crystal') and is therefore more highly valued. If in doubt, ask the manufacturer or a representative.
