Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken 1993 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese

I've just picked up a couple of bottles of Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken

1993 Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese A.P. Nr 3 551 083-5-94 out of a local merchant's bin-ends. I've seen various opinions of the 93 vintage in Germany and I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the wine. Is it a drink soon or has it still got a bit of life left in it?

Hi, I don't actually know this one - but I know this was an average year, not bad at all, but not a super vintage. A top Saar Auslese would anyway certainly be alive and kicking still - and this wine should be very drinkable now and keep a few years more - provided that it's provenance is accounted for. Happened to find a tasting note for the Auslese Nr. 1 (?) on the web: Rich weight of fruit and great softness in the mouth as the acidity has gradually knitted with the fruit. Complex and intense, with a wonderful freshness. Gault-Millau says: Riesling Auslese Forstmeister Geltz - Zilliken, Saarburg A. P. Nr. 3551083 5 94

7,5% vol. Alkohol Preis ab Weingut: 21,- EUR +++ 16,5/20 Gault Millau WeinGuide 1995 fwiw - Anders.

I have not tasted this wine, but I have had many Riesling Auslesen from the Saar. Many mature at a snail's pace, and it is not unusual for many to be quite good at 20 or more years of age. Of course in some of the more average years they may have a bit more sharp acid than some like, especially when young. However this sharpness will often smooth with enough age.
