Housewarming gift???

My sister just bought a new house and i'm thinking of getting a bottle of either wine or champagne (probably the latter) for her, for a house warming gift.

I'm looking at spending between $35 to $60 or so. Any ideas of what would be a good idea? Imagine you were buying a wine or sparkling wine for somebody and you didn't have any clue as to how dry or sweet he or she liked it... only idea is that thier favorite wine is merlot.

Is she into wine? That will be the defining piece of information needed. Someone not into wine will probably not "get" Bollinger, but will "get" Veuve Clicquot. If she's really into wine then something from a smaller producer could be good. How about Billecart Salmon?

I realize that you are asking for bottle recommendations, but if I may offer a suggestion if she is in to wines, how about a leverpull deluxe. It's only about $10-20 more than your upper limit, and it'll be there for years to come. As for wine that is also easy to find, I would recommend Raymond's Cab for being round, supple and fat. For cellaring, Mondavi's Cab is chewy, black and multi-layered perfect to save for a rainy day.
