Is the 1st rule of a winemaker to never to do anything that will serve to obscure the terroir of his wine?

One could of course counter with a request for a valid definition of 'terroir', that could be expressed in a language other than French. It could be seen as disingenious, though, or unfriendly, even. Cheers Nils
