Back a few weeks ago, someone mentioned a possible thread on their most embarrassing "wine" moment. I've waited for that thread to start, but, unless I've missed it, I'll start it now.
Shortly after moving to a new city, I was invited to a charity food and wine fest. I had attended one previous function of this group, so I knew most of the hosting committee. It was held in a downtown hotel, on a mezzanine about three stories up a thirty floor atrium, and was quite crowded. When I arrived, I began my tasting of both the food and the wine. I circulated, and chatted with the distributors and several chefs that I had come to know. I picked up a plate from one chef, that had some lovely thin, but long, bread sticks protruding from it. Very nice garnish, but a bit awkward. As all of the bistro-style tables were occupied, I placed my wine on a wide ledge overlooking the atrium. Just as I went to plunge my fork into the food, the bread sticks fell, and bounced off of the plate. I tried to catch them, as they still had some of the food on their base, but they were bouncing all over the ledge. As I tried to gather in the damned bread sticks, I tipped over my wine (red, of course), and it spilled on the ledge. Now I tried to get the bread sticks AND my wine glass. Of course, the glass fell over the edge, and struck the check-in table, three floors below. Luckily, no one was at the table at that moment, though they were very close by. Also, luckily, 99% of my red wine spilled onto my white suit, so there wasn't even a splash below. I quickly contributed a handsome sum to the charity, made my way down to the table, cleaned up my mess, offering apologies to all and promptly left –with a bright red stain on both my coat and trousers. I don't think I have received an invitation to this benefit since. Wine Away did remove the stains, but not my embarrassment. I only hope that this is the worst that I will ever be a part of!
