wines at sea

My wife and I were at sea last week and as is my custom I took a cellar in a bag and paid the corkage. I was going to sample an Amarone but the cold got in the way. (As it was I probably blew a perfectly good St. Emilion)

2002 cuvee terroir Charles Joguet Chinon $12.99 had with grilled salmon. Bright fresh fruity nose clean wine not a lot of tannins but a very pleasant wine to accompany the salmon. Would go well with other similar foods. Tasty B/b+

1999 Chablis Grand Cru Grenouilles L Michel

Oysters on half shell followed by broiled lobster. Clean light citrus notes on nose that showed minerals. the wine was full but not fat, everything that Chablis should be. We drank it at room temperature and it expressed itself better than many chilled whites.

1999 Gevry Chambertin 1ere cru Clos du Fonteny Domaine Bruno Clair.

Huge nose of cherries on opening deep color but not well integrated with the fruit strong on taste followed by a woody roughness. As dinner progressed the wine softened and opened so that after about an hour and a half it presented beautifully with a soft but refrshing finish very elegant. We drank it with roast duck and finished it when it was at its best with assorted cheeses. I probably should have had the wine steward just dump it into a decanter and probably would another time. A very nice wine. getting into A territory as I finished it.

2003 Granville-Lacoste Graves blanc. Tonight was Oriental and we decided to stick mainly with seafood.

This is one of my favorite everyday type wines crisp with a sauv blanc citrus herbaceousness nicely balanced by the semillion. It opens ready to go and drinks well through dinner. This wine is very consistent. a solid B+

1996 Chateau Larmande St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

On opening it came off a little sour until aired well I had a cold so neither appreciated or tasted all that this wine could produce. My wife did not notice any defects so I would surmise the that defect was in my taste buds/nose.

We also drank a 2001 Beau Site but I honestly have no idea how it tasted! :-(

[SNIP good TNs - thanks]

Question - which cruise line and what was corkage fee?

Only "cruise" that I've ever been on was billed as a "Napa Valley Wine Cruise," and was little more than a voyage across SF Bay, through San Pablo Bay, to Vallejo. From there we "bused" to various Sonoma and Napa wineries, as the Napa River was running too low to get the vessel up river. We had read the hype about the wonderful wines that would be served, but after the first night, decided to just set a theme and pick up wine for our table, rather than choose from three white Zins! No one said anything to us, and we had MUCH better wine each night.

Crystal! Superb food and $10 corkage fee. a great combination. Their wine list is very nice by the way (albeit quite pricy)

Thank you. Several sets of friends have been after us to do a cruise with them, to different locations. Other than the stated Napa Wine Cruise, I have no experience with what is actually offered. I appreciate your follow-up.

Send me a private email if you need some advice. I can give you a good insight into what is available. (And yes, I do sell cruises, but I can answer your questions without any obligation.)
