TN: 2005 Mer Soleil Chardonnay

Picked this up for Marci's Birthday dinner at Blackfish, a BYOB in Conshohocken last night. I had a few sips at a graduation party last week and was pretty impressed.

It was a deeper golden color than most chardonnay's I had. Lots of tropical fruit, granny smith apple flavors with a very buttery mouthfeel. Left an impression of honey on the aftertaste.

I'd gotten away from oaky chards but this had lots of oak I really enjoyed it.

Note: Please weigh the accuracy of what you read above against the fact that I am a complete wine novice.

I'd say you hit it right on the head. Mer Soleil comes from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County and the vineyard is/was owned by the Wagner family of Caymus fame. I find the flavors that you describe to be quite common in that appelation.
