The Argiolas Costera Isola dei Nuraghi 2004 (Cannonau from Serdiana Italy) is a rather deep colored red. The Cannonau grape is know as Grenache in France. In Sardinia it often makes a rather good wine that can be rather strong. This wine apparently was made very well in a style that allows it to be drunk fairly young without excess tannin and acid. It has considerable fruit and spice, the tannins are medium and restrained, and the acid is moderate. The wine is still fairly powerful and would hold up to dishes that one often would serve with a southern Rhone. While not in the same class as a top classic Barolo, at under 4 years old it is far better drinking now than a top 4 year old Barolo, usually quite sharp and acid with mouth coating tannins when this young. However when the top Barolo peaks in many years, this wine may likely be in great decline. This wine is unlikely to get rave reviews, but for everyday service with food, it can serve very well.
