[TN] Wines with a German accent

Jan 20, 2006 5 Replies

Hello; As the practical part of the lecture on the wines of Germany and Austria, 6 whites, tasted blind.

1 Very light color. [n] Shy, evasive, slightly perfumed, apples and a touch of florality, mebbe marhsmallows or bananas [p] Acidicity in the attack followed by a certain asperity. Obvious impression of high alcohol content. Overall impression: Except for the high alcohol, could have been a very young and anonymous Mosel riesling. In fact, it was Loibner Loibenberg Smaragd Trocken 2003 (Alzinger), pure Grüner Veltliner price c. SEK 175

2 Also very light [n] Unpleasant. SUlfur? Unclean. BAd shellfish, said one of the mates. Touch of oak. [p] Acidic attack, dry, a very slight fleeting spice (could be oak), a slight residual sweetness in the aftertaste, unripe bananas. OVerall impression: Definitely not a riesling. Definitely not something I like. Brindelmayer ALte Reben Kampthal 2002, also GV. PRice c SEK 225

3 Bit more color [n] THis is more like it. Peach, peach liqueur, pleasantly perfumed, intense, petroleum, flowers (bird cherry), honey, violets [p] Sweetness, petroleum, mildly acidic, good length, lighter than the nose might imply. Butter, almonds on the aftertaste. Overall impression: SOmething to contemplate the good things in life over. More meditation than food. I like it. Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese (Mosel) Dr Pauly Bergweiler Price c SEK
130

4 Oh boy, here we go again ... [n] hard to identify, fiery, apricots, perfumed (unpleasantly), honey [p] even worse. COnsider a cabbage head (white). Now, cut off the leaves, and find the sort of woody tap inside. Now, bite into that. Dig? There are minerals, and vegetables, high alcohol, a bitterness and a sort of gravelly dryness on the aftertaste Overall impression: Oh dear. THis is ... interesting. Juliusspital Würzburg Ipphöfer Julius Echterberg Silvaner Spätlese Trocken

2003. PRice c SEK 180

5 [n] beeswax, minerals (slate) spice, evolves a sniff of lilacs [p] very strong acidity, very much citrus, with elegance and length, ending on a buttery aftertaste. Overall impression: This took some getting used to, but it gained considerably. Rüdesheimer Berg SChlossberg Rheingau George Breuer Price c SEK 200

6 This one was fairly amber and obviously old. [n] a fading spicey note followed by notes of maturity, age, bread [p] very prominent acidity, w nuts and butter, very good length Overall impression: I thought this was a joker, perhaps a Chenin blanc. I was wrong.IT was ALSAce Riesling "Selection" 1966 from the Coop in RIbeauvillé. PRice (auction) c SEK 300

The tasting deteriorated into a discussion on what to drink with #5 with obviously screams for food.

Cheers

This I think we can chalk up to the effects of the '03 vintage, but:

^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ Brundlmayer? Kamptal

This one surprises me, Nils. Good producer, good vineyard, good (for the most part) year. I wonder if this wine could be a victim of flooding in '02?

Mark Lipton

Bründlmayer yeah

Definitely not. Less than 1% of Austria's vineyards were flooded, and these were the low-lying, high-cropping vineyards for basic qualities. Definitely not where Willi's Old Vine GV comes from.

Looked up my notes from summer 2004:

Ruhige Tiefe; saftige Frucht, unspektakulär und nicht wirklich aufregend, 86/100.

Not one of the more interesting bottlings, I fear.

M.

Aha! I see. Michael, did you get my email? I sent it to your reply-to address.

Mark Lipton

I suspect a faulty bottle - but the verdict of Michael P does not, really, clash with mine. Sorry for the spelling - as for the name of the producer (no I am not really into Austrian wine, more´s the pity) I blame the handwriting of Mårten, as for Kamptal, well, my German seems to be less than it used to :(

And tonight we have a New Zeeland tasting. Out of 4 wines on the agenda, how many will be Sauvignon Blanc? (Answer: 3, at the most, as we bring a Chardonnay, the SB we were looking for having failed to arrive in the Systembolaget)

Cheers,

Nils Gustaf

Sorry, no. Maybe you retry, with cc to pronay at chello.at.
