A half million cases of wine??? Wines Central appears to be a major storage facility for the Northern California wine industry. It would seem that this could have some major ramifications.

I agree, this may end up changing the face of California's commercial wine production and storage. As well as have serious implications for those storing the fruits of last season. A couple of good wine years will be lost to obscurity. As is the ability of some producers to compare years of wine to each other. I work in Information Technology and we've long been told don't put all your eggs in one basket. I understand that this was an ideal storage facility but as we can see the best laid plans...... As i understand it there were some improvements being made to the roof, a layer of new tar. This may have been the cause of the blaze. I'm sure that insurance will cover the majority of loss and that the large producers storing there will recover most of their losses and remain financially secured. It's my thought that the little guy and the small to midrange producers will take it on the chin.

All in all it's a sad day for the California Wine community...that's you and I folks!

At least us folks in IT can maintain mirrors/clones of crucial data in multiple places to minimize the impact of events like this.

Interesting article in the SF Chronicle:
