Vino-o-meter Troubles

Hi,

trying to use one of these on a kit Reisling. I must be doing something really wrong because I can't get a reading at all. The top of the liquor (from where I believe I read) never reaches the zero mark, never mind a percentage. Where am I going wrong?

It should be very clean, I clean mine with grain alcohol after rinsining, it leaves no residue.

The wine must be dry, it works on viscosity.

I fill mine 2/3 full, let 6 drops pass through and invert to read.

You may be trying to read it before the wine has completely filled the tube and begun dripping out of the bottom. You must wait for this and then flip it over and wait for it to settle down to the right mark. Those things are such a pain in the patootie that I don't use mine anymore. I just use my hydrometer.

It was dripping but I think you may be right and it may be a toy for the bin. I will stick with the hydrometer. The reason I was checking was I think the kit is a bit pooh. Initial gravity was 67 which seems way too low so I guess I will need to drink this one quickly.

There are worse things in life than having a lot of cheap wine that you need to drink! Just be sure everybody is already drunk first! John 2:10 and *said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when {the people} have drunk freely, {then he serves} the poorer {wine;} {but} you have kept the good wine until now." John 2:11 This beginning of {His} signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

Serves me right for buying it I suppose. I got carried away buying some new toys including a 5g fermenting tub and needed a 5g kit to go in it. The only ones available where both CWE Speedy Goldzales - Reisling or Chardonnay. I should have waited :-(

On the plus side, just started my first fruit wine not from kit. :-)
