Really Good Pub In Oxford ?

I shall be visiting Oxford soon.

Can anyone recommend a good pub ?

If it has a reasonable selection of veggie food that would be a bonus, but the ale's more important.

The Turf Tavern behind Hertford college, and the White Horse on Broad Street are both must-see establishments.

Try the Lamb and Flag or the Eagle and Child, which is on the other side of the road.

I second Dom's recommendation of The Turf, although the food is no more than reasonable and isn't all that hot on the veggie front.

The King's Arms has better food than The Turf, but the beer isn't as good.

The Lamb and Flag currently has a very decent selection of ales advertised outside, but in seven years of trying (it's always been the closest pub to my various offices so every six months or so, I give it another try) I've yet to have a decent pint there and have now given up on the place.

The Eagle and Child does OK food, but the beer (the usual Six Continents or whatever Bass are called this week selection) is no more than average . . . and the wall-to-wall tourists taking piccies of the Inklings photos can rather put one off one's pint.

For pure beer quality rather than Oxford cute, I'd always recommend The Hobgoblin in St Aldates. There are also reports of a pretty mean veggie curry to accompany the Wychwood ales and the constantly rotating selection of well-kept (guest beers.

If you like Fullers (and not everybody does), I'd also recommend The Harcourt Arms in Jerico. Food is basic: ploughman's and toasties, but always freshly prepared.

Try the 'Wharf House', 14 Butterwyke Place, Oxford, Tel: 01865 246752 Last time I was there it was run by Landlord 'Tony Flatman.

A bloody brilliant 'basic boozer' with some cracking Beers ... (British and 'foreign' bottled) ... I think that RCH 'Pitchfork' was (is ?) the 'House Beer'.

No food as far as I can remember, but what a pub ! Well worth a visit.

Cheers ...

There was a thread on this last summer:

Most of the comments there are still relevant. The Hobgoblin has declined slightly following a change of manager but is still worth a visit. The Wheatsheaf in High Street has seriously declined, whereas the Chequers almost next door is much improved (4 cask ales).

Still is... Worth phoning ahead to check it's open. Officially it's open 11-3 and 6-11, but this can vary owing to Tony's unique approach to pub management..

Usually there's Hook Norton Best and RCH Pitchfork, plus 2 others.

Pickled eggs? Pickled onions?

Best regards, Paul
