What a swizz

Shopping on Sainsburys to You the other day, I saw they had an offer on Kölsch bier. I was a bit confused an thought this was the German smoked beer ( OK, I got it mixed up with Rauch) and it's actually Köln beer of course.

Anyhow, when it arrived, I was a bit put out to see it was brewed in Greenwich, SE London and not Cologne at all. Still, it used authentic ingredients and was unpasteurised and was a very nice beer.

Which brewery ?

Given that the only working brewery in Greenwich is the Meantime brewery, and Meantime supply several beers for Sainsburys, the logical conclusion is that I have no idea, sorry.

The Rogue Chocolate Stout at this year's GBBG would take some beating in that respect, I think.

news:...

The other side of the label says "Cologne Style", but the website just says "Sainsbury's Kolsch Lager" until you click on the "info" icon, then a photo and this accurate description comes up.

Just tried the Raspberry and Bavarian Wheat beer from the same brewery. Very good beers! Simon

Thanks

It is indeed, at EU level, and Cologne Brewers are pretty fierce defenders of the reputation of their beer...

qv. also

and

for the complete lists of beers under some kind of EU protection. The UK entries in the first one are laughable, especially the registration of Rutland Bitter...

But in most cases, those protected denominatiosn are rather worthless, because the rule book re. their implementation and enforcement is not tight enough...

Cheers !
