Between Ian (though in FR and not UK), and some other sources, I've assembled a list of restaurants in London for my upcoming trip - though all reservations have not been finalized yet. We're doing Savoy, Scott's, 15, Tamrind and Alistair Greig's Grill. Now, I'm looking for recommendations for wine bars, especially in the Mayfair district of London.
I've followed many of the recommendations from "Quaffers London - Where to quaff wine in the capital," but have been unimpressed. Perhaps due to the publication date and the volatile situation in bars and restaurants, many were "martini bars," when I visited, and are probably on to something else by now. Though I'll be walking, tubing and cab'ing, the locations do not have to be in Mayfair, as I'll walk five miles for a good wine bar. What I'd love to find are a few unique establishments, that offer something beyond the normal "entry level," wines by-the-glass. The atmosphere is a big positive, along with the wine list. Since I am not a crown prince, or trying to impress a gaggle of investment bankers, I'm not looking for wine bars, that just have "over-the- top" esoteric collectibles, but since I pretend that the £'s are US$'s and just don't fret the exchange rate, I'm not looking for cheap plonk either. If you have any recommendations for "must visit" wine bars in London (also in Oxford, as I'll be there for a bit), I'd greatly appreciate hearing them.
