You must visit Tyrell's. Although not a 'boutique' winery, it is the home of Australia's best Semillon. If you are really nice to the tasting staff, you may persuade them to opn an aged Vat 1..... at 8-10 years old, this wine is nectar of the gods!

There are lots of great Boutique wineries in the Hunter Valley I have two addresses that I visited and they were great.

De Iuliis Vineyard Mr Michael De Iuliis Lot 1, Lovedale Road Rothbury, NSW 2321 Australia

Great Range.... Shiraz, Chardonnay , Verdelho, Semillon. Not available in the US.

The other is Hope Estate Winery Cobcroft Road, Broke NSW 2330 Hunter Valley, Australia

There wines are available in the US but the quality and expression of the wines make it worth a visit.

I'll second Tyrell's, although not small winery it was a sheer pleasure. I was there during the Christmas season (just before the holidays started) so it was pretty slow. I must have tried 15 wines, including a couple of aged Vat 1's. It was very educational. I also enjoyed Brokenwood and a couple of others that I can't think of right now. I'll check my notes and post again if I come across something of interest. Tim

Sydney's the wrong city to visit if you're interested in visiting good wineries - you'd have much better luck from Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart or Perth.

Anyway, the Hunter is a pretty ordinary (but prolific) wine region with a few jewels:

Lakes Folly (if they have any stock...they only do two wines) Tower Estate Brokenwood Tyrrell's Lindemans McWilliams Mt Pleasant Keith Tulloch Kulkunbulla Mount View McLeish

That's probably the pick of the bunch. Brokenwood, Tyrrell's, Lindemans and McWilliams are the big companies...the others are much smaller.

It's hardly any further to go to Canberra - they can offer Madew, Brindabella Hills, Lark Hill and Clonakilla. Or a little further to Mudgee - perhaps try Andrew Harris, Huntington and Abercorn.
