FAQs Website Update

The web version of the FAQs has now been updated a bit. The new domain dedicated to the FAQs, as mentioned before, is given at the bottom of this page. Redirects have been put on all of the older versions to point to the newest page. If you get redirected from an older link, you may want to update to the new link in your favorites, as your back arrow may not work if you go through a redirect.

The site has been submitted to 13 search engines. I have read that it can take considerable time before links star appearing on search engines, unless you pay Google and others for a featured listing. That is the way many businesses get their site near the top of search engines, and some large companies spend thousands of dollars for this.

You enter the domain through a domain index page, with the FAQs being the only thing in the index at present. Since the index page was a bit bare, I am including pictures of wines below the text. An external javascript select a picture from a file of several at random and displays it. If the browser does not support script or has it turned off, then the same picture always is displayed using a noscript path. If images are tured off, there just is no image at the bottom of the page. Once at the index page, if you reload(refresh) the page, a new picture will be displayed at random, which might even be the same picture.

You've done a nice job. :)

I would reccomend that the "front page" be eliminated, so that users go directly to the information they are looking for (the FAQs) without having to pass through a wine bottle graphic. A link could be put on the FAQ page which would go to this graphic, for those interested in looking at an old wine bottle. But mostly, front pages like that just get in the way. People should be able to leap to the FAQs. :)

Oh, I kind of like it :) The photos load quite quickly, and I am on a dial-up (this connection 52.0 kbps), here at home. Are they from your collection, cwdjrxyz?

Without wanting to seem too bold, may I make a suggestion? Could the "regulars", perhaps, have a .sig with a link to the FAQ, such as below? I really don't post much, but it might be helpful. d. :)

No, the front page is a domain index page and will stay. In the future another subject might be added to this index instead of just one, and at that point the index would be revised with another link button on it. If the page then becomes cluttered, then the images might need to go.

There is absolutely no problem if you want to go directly to the FAQs. Just bookmark it, which is

when you are viewing it and then you can start from there the next time. Actually the FAQs is a collection of about 20 files - some web pages and some helper files, such as images, an external script, an external css file, etc. Construction of web sites is now highly modular in current official W3C valid code. Someone might be only interested in food - wine matching, for example. In that case you could navigate to the page for matching, book mark it, and then go to it directly in the future.

No problem, just bookmark the main FAQ file when you go there, and that URL will take you directly there in the future. Or if you are only interested in any of the sub-subjects in the FAQs, just navigate there and book mark the URL. Then you can use this URL to go directly there. However, I only intend to use the index page in my sigs. The reason is that I want the search engines to pick up the whole domain as much as possible. If casual users get used to going there, they will then pick up any possible additional subject added to the index.

Yes, I photographed some wines I have. I do not want to use any photos under copyright on the site. I could add some more photos from others, but they must be free of copyright and I would need a statement to that effect and that they may be used on the site. I can process most common digital photo files using PaintShop to adjust resolution, size, and format required for the web page. By the way, you can see all of the images in the file for random selection by going to

. Only the picture that is selected at random is downloaded to a viewing computer, so that is why the page downloads fast, even on dialup.

Actually, that's not what I meant. What I mean is that perhaps some of the more regular posters could consider adding the FAQ to their .sig, so that any new posters who come across the group may see the FAQ... d.
