Possible Inclusion of German Wine Regions in FAQs

I have hoped that someone would write something about German wine regions for the FAQs. I found a resource that might serve in the meantime.

One might add a single reference to Germany rather than a set of individual regions. Then you would give a link to

. This vast site covers much about vineyards, regions, grapes, labels, and restaurants in wine regions. It does not have a listing of places to stay, but some of the restaurants suggested are noted to be in decent to grand hotels.

What do you think of the suggested site? If you do not like it, or find portions of it lacking, perhaps you could write something else or some additions to what is discussed on the site :-) .

Nice site, thanks for posting. Another good site (though less helpful possibly for touring) is Peter Ruhrberg's:

Adding a German section is a great idea, but the link is just not up to date.

I noticed that the last vintage discussed was the 1991. Thus this part could be up to 5 years behind. If this were the only problem, perhaps someone could list more recent vintages. I doubt that there have been many changes in restaurants, estates to visit etc. However some estates do have their ups and downs. Of course the main text of the page could have been written many years before 1991 and might or might not have been updated. Despite the age of the page, we could use a list of places to stay other than a few hotels associated with restaurants on the restaurant pages. I wonder if the site Dale Williams suggested is more up to date. Also if one wants to include parts of the site I mentioned, one could add a note that the site is a bit old, but may be of some help. However one should confirm phone numbers, etc. before going to a location mentioned. I am not wishing to recommend any site as best. I am just hoping to get someone to suggest sites to use or to write a section on German wines. Hopefully we will get some sections on French wines before long. I am hoping someone, such as Ian Hoare who has not been around recently, will do a section on Hungarian wines. Then hopefully sections on Italian, Spanish, and Portugese wines can be added. Of course Mark is the editor to make the final decision of what to include, as far as I am concerned.

Typo in above. The last vintage discussed was 2001.

I am leaving for Germany tomorrow and will be visiting most of the major wine regions. I will try to make some notes and post them. I will be tasting mostly 05 wines and some of the juice from this years harvest.

I find the site fairly accurate (though there are the odd proof-reading/ editing mistakes) and good as an introduction to the lay reader (which is after all the purpose of an FAQ).

In this thread, a weakness pointed out is that vintages are not adequately discussed. Frankly, the comments that are available on this site are quite pointless. What is it worth to be saying, for a country producing just under 10 million hl of wine annually (across regions, producers, grape varietals, colour/ vinification style) whether the year was very good or good or bad?

Also what it does not have is a list of good producers in the various regions. If there is a demand for it, I can provide a draft for some regions (Nahe, Rheingau, Franken). Others here are experts on Mosel. I can also get a few suggestions for the hessische Bergstrasse, Baden and Pfalz. That would leave out some regions (Ahr, Mittelrhein, Wuerrtemberg, Rheinhessen and the two smaller eastern regions) but it would be a start.

The glossary ("Wine basics") and recent press sections on

are fairly good.

Also fairly informative, though a bit bland is the site of the Deutsches Weininstitut

Thank you one and all for the information! It'll all go into the FAQ, I promise.
