Tonight with a late dinner of leftovers, Jean selected to open:

2006 Schloss Gobelsburg "Gobelsburger" Grüner Veltliner

color: green-gold nose: effusive minerals, green pea with a touch of honey palate: rich, mouthfilling, good minerality, decent acidity, loads of fruit and a hint of honey

Wow! This is my first encounter with the '06 GV vintage, and if this wine is any indication this is going to be a year to follow. Having read Michael Pronay's comments re '06, I am now more inclined than ever to not write them off as overexuberence. Very worth the price at $12.59 (with case discount).

Mmmmmmmm. Must find. mmmmmmmmm.

That's a very good price. Personally, I prefer the Wachau style for Gruners (no oak, loads of minerality), but there's not denying the quality of Schloss Gobelsburg. In fact, that's where a vintner we work with, Marion Ebner, gets to tend some grapes for her Melusine project.

Afaik, the basic Schloss Gobelsburg "Gobelsburger" sees no oak.

Btw, she's getting married in September.

M.
