TN: Dinner at Tru

Belated Happy Birthday!

Sounds like a nice meal, even if a slight disappointment.

A place with Roumier by the glass should get bonus points. I was thinking of opening either a 2000 Roumier or Mugnier village soon as most '00s are drinking well.

It's always a challenge to decide what to do re tasting menus. I just made reservations at Manresa for this summer. The control-freak part of me wants to choose my own wines, but brain says pairings might be easier. I'll consult those in the know.

cheers,

Yup, they passed the ordinance on Apr. 25, but it doesn't take effect for 90 days. Rick Tramanto (the chef) is probably showcasing foie gras now as a political statement ;-)

Disappointment is probably too strong a word. It was the best meal of the year for us, no question. It's just that expectations were very high, so it was easy to fall short.

This one certainly was. And, yes, their by the glass selection was far from pedestrian, but a bit limited in scope. They have 1200 wines on the wine list, but only 20 by the glass? That seems a bit skewed to me.

Good idea. I think it's fun to see what they choose and to critique their choices. At Charlie Trotter's I did just that. But, if they're just choosing from the wines by the glass choices, I can do that too and I know my tastes better than they do ;-) Ideally, since a lot of people are choosing that tasting menu over the course of the evening, IMO all the wines on the wine list should be in play (price notwithstanding).

Have fun! Mark Lipton

Huh?

Any chance one of you could explain to a poor dumb foreigner what's going on in Chicago regarding foie gras? What's the reasoning behind this...and is it likely to spread to other cities?

Thanks

Bob

It already has. PETA is on a tear to get rid of duck or goose foi gras in the US. They will, unfortunately, be successful in this PC world.
