[TN] NV Piper-Heidsieck

Jean likes to have Champagne on hand for various celebrations and the occasional evening meal. Tonight we had the family of one of Andrew's friends over for a dinner of salmon and trout and opened a bottle obtained locally some time ago:



NV Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Brut nose: subtle, apples, light toast and minerals palate: creamy, lemon and light toast, very seamless and crisp



Of the several bottles we've had of this (all presumably from the same lot, though I haven't checked lot numbers to see), this one was the most impressive. Very fresh, very fruity with lovely balance and restraint.

Many years ago I often bought Piper-Heidsieck NV and sometimes vintage Brut. Back then it seemed to have a heavier style than now. For the last 2 or 3 years, I have kept some of their NV brut in 1/4 bottles around. This saves drinking too much Champagne or letting it go somewhat flat by storing an opened bottle when only one person wants a drink of Champagne. If a whole bottle can be used in a short time, then it likely will be less expensive than 4 1/4 bottles. The 1/4 bottles have held up well for 2-3 years, although they seem to have rounded some on storage. These bottles have screw caps with plastic extensions on top of the cap that give the bottles the appearance of conventional corked Champagne bottles when covered with foil around the neck. However they do not use wire around the neck, as it is not needed for a screw cap.

thanks for notes. I think a little cellar time can help lots of NV Champagne. The problem of course is knowing how long it's already been around!
