What is your second love?

Dear wine geeks or d:o nerds, cork dorks, and con-u-wa-sewers.

Since you are reading this, you have most likely a certain interest in wine. It may be passing, or superficial, but I doubt that you would be here if it were. If you do not feel comfortable with any of the honorifics, pray, don't let me detain you.

After reading an article in Decanter a few years back, where a group of wine judges were interviewed about, amongst other things, what their SECOND love (after wine) was, and finding that most of them had lots of interests, mainly cultural, or esthetic, as e g music, I now wonder: what about you? Do you have a seond love, some other interest that takes up alot of your time, apart from wine?

Personally, I do enjoy music (cool jazz from the 50s and 60s, particularly ROn Carter; and African art music), hiking, and, for some curious reason, French medieval history.

What about you?

Cheers

Nils

Cigars and Genealogy.

I should stick with just Genealogy. Much much cheaper than the other two. :-)

I'm lucky enough to be old enough to have had a number of SECOND loves over the years. As one matures, they change, or we just become bored with the OLD LOVE, or just have worn ourselves out with that particular one.

Good question, though. Otherwise, one withers.

I'm an avid outdoors person. I love to hunt and fish. I also have trail horses (American Quarter Horses) as a hobby and my wife and I trail ride over the miles of trails around our farm and neighboring farms with our friends and neighbors. I still play guitar and sit in with friends occasionally since my "gigging" days are long over....no more 2:00am load-outs! My tastes range from Motown to Mozart but I'm especially fond of 60's & 70's rock, folk rock, country rock. etc. My official residence is on a golf course (Muirfield Village) so I still play a bit of golf but not nearly as avidly as I used to.....I've been trying to upgrade my language so the less I play the better my language..:-) Lastly, I enjoy automobiles and have been a Porsche fan for most of my adult life. So I have a lot on my plate besides wine!

Probably too many to completely enumerate:

food (is that a distinct love?), travel, music, sports (golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, swimming), reading, hiking and the outdoors.

I collect and research maple trees. For those of you who's friends think your interest in wine is boring, you should see the eyes roll when you tell them your a member of the Maple Society! ;)

Otherwise I like to cook, travel, sports, modern fiction, early history.

Dan-O, you've got good taste: Medeski worked in my quartet back in the Boston days, ;) I think MMW made their first recording at Accurate Records. This was before he discovered the organ vocation. :) (I love John, he's the real deal.)

Emery, I know that this is probably before your time but did you ever have a chance to work with or see Frank Rosolino in concert? I'm a huge fan of his work.

A great player. Indeed before my time, and west coast to boot. I was never fortunate enough to meet or hear him in person.

Cooking and baking - especially bread. Oh how I wish bread were not such a source of calories then I could eat it at every meal and snack on it too! Tomorrow, I will be teaching my infant grandchildren how to make cookies and cupcakes. Cycling, classical music and, when I have the time, woodworking. Graham

Hey Dan, Emery - you have just opened a new door to the universe - I had not heard of this group before and here I am listening to them on YouTube and they are totally awesome. Funky organ jazz is alive and lives in ... Brooklyn?

Attending/photographing the soccer and American football games of my two boys; playing volleyball (both indoor and beach); golfing and carp fishing (although I do these very rarely now that I am living in Germany) and I have become addicted to podcasts - I very rarely listen to music anymore.

My second love.... Cooking; especially items local to the Garden of Eden otherwise known as the Canadian Niagara Peninsula.

Cruising the peninsula seeking out new artisanal cheese makers and other food producers.

Reading... local history presently.
