Does anyone have any recommendations of good real ale and good food pubs in the Yorkshire Dales, especially in the Hawes area?
Thanks,
Dan

Can't give you specific information but Hawes is only about 25 miles from Masham and the Black Sheep Brewery, well worth a visit though I haven't seen their Yorkshire Square Ale for quite a while, I fear that the E.U. and its idiot rules might have scuppered a fine brew.

We stay in the Hawes/Gale often, but lately (with the change in ownership of The Board) we end up eating and drinking in other towns. Try The Crown in Askrigg or some of the pubs in Leyburn. The Rose and Crown in Bainbridge can be pretty nice, but the hand-pulled ale is limited. There is also the White Swan in Richmond. Oh yes, try the micro-brew-pub just outside of Leyburn (cannot remember the name at the moment -- but it was really good). Ooh Ooh, the Wensleydale Brewery at The Forrester Arms Pub in Carleton just outside Leyburn.
So there.

try this

Now you got me going. Drive west from Hawes to Dent and go to The Sun for great Dent Ales from the Dent Brewery. Especially try T'owd Tup.
chuck (yet again, sorry bout that)

I believe they have Yorkshire squares in both slate & steel, the yeast from the slate will not live in the steel so they have to use 2 different yeast's, how they cope with cross contamination I don't know.
point of order - that is in Cumbria!!

Yeah, but it's a real easy drive from Hawes, and I love Hawes, but I haven't liked many pubs there since so many have changed hands to cater to the weekend trade.

and in any case, why didn't you mention the Hambleton one over the road?
Probably just 'cause I don't know it. I've always gotten nice Dent ales at The Sun so saw no need to go elsewhere. Usually we are just "passin' thru" .
Can you provide some info for my next trip please?
chuck
I already did!
On the other hand... you could buy a nice shiny new Cumbria Real Ale Guide! details from website in my sig.
Oops - just had a look in mine - doesn't seem to be Hambleton beered any more. Must be 10-12 years since our branch camping trip there!!
George & Dragon - 3 Dent beers and Boddingtons.
Go over the hill to the Farmers' Arms at Muker.

Thanks to everyone!
I'll be taking a sizeable list of good pubs with me when I head off in the morning!
Thanks again,
Happy drinking!
