FX Pichler Loibner Gruner Veltliner 1994 Von Der Terrassen Smaragd, Troken $17 (paid last summer)
This was really just more of a curiosity than anything else. I had bought a few bottles of this last year based on the reputation of the producer and my general appreciation for GV. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised and strangely satisfied with this particular example. It didn't have nearly the amount of acidity or upfront minerality that younger GV's have shown me. Rather is almost started to take on undertones of a rich and luscious Chardonnay that possessed a little more weight and richness than any GV I have tasted. I have a few more in the cellar that I will be pleased to open but can anyone tell me any opinions about a wine like this and whether drinking it at ten years old is advisable. 1994 is long before I was interested and able to purchase wine so it really is more of a curiosity than anything else; but if I were to say buy one today would it be recommendable to wait ten years before opening it?
