Our last night in FL was spent dining out at a new restaurant opened just down the street from my in-laws' apartment. Takeya turns out to be a very interesting place: teppanyaki/sushi bar/pan-Asian restaurant (and it works!). While dining on their excellent sushi, we got from their so-so wine list:
2005 Whitehaven Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc nose: powerful, tropical fruits, grass palate: loads of tropical fruit, grapefruit, grassiness and a hint of cat peeThis wine is an example of the "opulent" style of NZ Sauvignon, as exemplified by Palliser Estate in previous vintages. Despite my general fondness for wines of style and balance, there is a soft spot in my heart for NZ Sauvignons that are over the top, as this one is. In fact, it paired quite well with my nigiri sushi (scallop, ama-ebi, maguro, hamachi, snapper and tobiko), the sunomono and futomaki that I shared with Jean. Despite the sensation of fruit, the wine seems quite dry.
