Viniology Kits?

Feb 03, 2005 3 Replies

I have seen Chardonnay and Merlot wine kits from a company called Viniology advertised on the web. Haven't seen any mention of them in this newsgroup. They're quite inexpensive. Has anybody tried them? Gotten reasonable results?

Generally "inexpensive" means "lacking in Body, flavour, vinosity(?)..... usw!!!!!!!"

If you appreciate wine in its many different aspects and you are going to use a "kit" then please do go as far upmarket as you can. "Inexpensive" does create shudders in more than my mind when one is talking about wine in general and wine kits in particular. But there are some very good results from wine kits -- particularly white wines --- red wines are more problematical! So with white wine kits you can veer to the less expensive but with reds do that at your peril!

I have just been looking at the "Boreal Laboratories Ltd" website which is marketing/making the Viniology kits. I should have done that before making my first post on this subject --- sorry!

My first further comment is that they are not what I would call "inexpensive".

At $40.20 for 15 bottles -- or over $80 for 30 bottles for a 5 gal (imp)/23 litre batch which I normally make. Having searched the US online shops it seems that a typical price for a "Selection International" wine kit is about $80 ( I pay about £55 + in UK) Which puts the Viniology kits at the top end of the price bracket for wine kits!

Boreal seem to be a company specialising in Classroom science equipment! That being the case, I personally wouldn't touch them with a bargepole!!!!!! They are certainly NOT inexpensive and appear to have no track record and their website is not forthcoming in any further information about the 2 wines kits ( only 2!)

You will realise that I am only expressing my personal opinion here!

Apparently, Boreal is asking for a pretty hefty price for the Viniology kits. If you shop around a bit, you can easily beat the $40 price that they're asking. Let's start on ebay:

*NEW* Viniology CHARDONNAY Wine Kit price: US $19.95

Viniology Merlot Zinfandel Wine Kit..... price: US $21.95

Those are the "buy it now" prices. You might save a few bucks if you bid in the auction. Or, if you don't like ebay, try

where you can find them for $30.

Of course that doesn't include shipping, but I assume Boreal would charge you shipping too...
