To me, wine always tastes better if it has a good story behind it, or you have some connection--however vague--to the winery. For whatever reason, I am a big fan of the Tesserons and their two properties.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and the local Binny's has Pontet Canet vintages from '96 through '01. When I go there, I am tempted to splurge and do a vertical tasting--but I can't find 2-3 other couples who would really appreciate it!

If the '96 is priced below $50-60, it's a great example of a structured Bordeaux. That's a good one for one couple to follow over the course of a night! Thanks for link.

Have you tried the 96 yet. I have in cellar but was not planing to try for a few years.

Futures...$27 a bottle I think.

It's definitely not fully mature yet, but like most '96s not impenetrable. A bottle last year (not mine, mine are sleeping) was I think decanted an hour before dinner. A bit dense at first, developed through night, really singing probably 5 hours after opening.
